Catchment Sensitive Farming grant is being launched in February as usual. Money allocated to the project is £21 million which is double last year. Target area has expanded into specific locations in the Taw and Torridge Area this year for one year only. Please contact us for more informaiton.

Attended a meeting on Monday about various funding. Looks like the South West has been allocated £4 million for the Farming and Forestry Improvement Scheme but this is fast running out. Advice from DEFRA is get in on the next window of oppotunity (likely to be April / May 2012) or risk the money running out.

DEFRA Grant Scheme Launched

Yesterday saw the launch of the new £20 million grant scheme

The Farming and Forestry Improvement Scheme will fund new profit-boosting green schemes that:

save energy and reduce carbon emissions;
reduce dependence on artificial fertilizers through better use of manures;
improve soil quality;
improve animal health and welfare;
save and recycle water; and
promote woodland management by processing timber more efficiently.

Ilfracombe and Combe Martin Workshops Confirmed

We have confirmed the venue and dates of these practical farm workshops and welcome anybody who farms within the area to attend. We will be discussing:

· The value of clean bathing water.

· A review of the current state of the local waters and what you can do to improve things.

· Financial and other support available via the project such as 1-2-1 farm visits, a small capital grant and 5 free soil samples per farm in the catchment.

The events will be held as follows:

Thursday 13th october - 10.30am Combe Martin Baptist Church Hall

Been organising workshops and farm visits today for the Taw, Torridge and North Devon Streams Strategic Project. We currently have available fully funded farm visits for any farm in the catchment, 5 free soil samples for all farms who have a visit and a pot of money for a capital works such as yard improvements, watercourse fencing and livestock drinking water provision.

An article in today's Farmers Weekly reminds me that different people have very different views on how badgers should be managed on farm. I suggest the industry should take note of the strong position that will inevitably be taken by the law on farmers doing things they should not do to badgers on their holding.

Feed In Tariff Fast Track Review

Re looked at the FITS for solar PV for a client and as of the 1st August 2011 the rates for a stand alone solar PV installment irrespective of size is 8.5p/kWhr. Stand alone is defined as "not attached to a building and not wired to provide electricity to an occupied building". This will have massive implications for anyone who is planning a stand alone ground mounted solar PV system.

Grazing Measurement

Lent out the plate meter, for the second time this summer, to client keen to see what grassland measurement can do to cut his feeding costs. Talked of focusing on average grass cover of 2300 kg/ha and matching grass growth and demand. Looking forward to follow up meeting to see how he gets on.

NVZ Defered Storage Area

Looked into the situation for farmers within the NVZ deferred storage areas. The NFU state that DEFRA had indicated that it would let proposals known by June 2011 but this has now slipped to October to when the public consultation on the next round of NVZ's is due to take place.
